Black Hills Events, Shows & EntertainmentThere is a surprising variety of shows and other entertainment opportunities in the Black Hills. These events occur mostly in the evening but daytime performances may also be scheduled for some of the more popular events. For instance, the Black Hills Playhouse (http://www.blackhillsplayhouse.com/) often schedules matinees on the weekends.
One of the best shows is free: the nightly lighting program at Mt. Rushmore. This, in itself, is a good reason to stay in Keystone. The program is scheduled for 9 p.m. from mid-May through August 31; after that, the program starts at 8 p.m. The program includes a brief talk by a ranger, a film and on some occasions an entertainment program before the monument is lighted. This is a popular program and visitors are advised to arrive early to get seats in the Mt. Rushmore Amphitheater. Most people agree that it is one of best shows in the Black Hills.
For a number of years now Mt. Rushmore has scheduled an Independence Day fireworks show on July 3rd. This program is also free. Plans for the 2007 program have not yet been announced but as long as the forest fire danger remains moderate a 2007 program is probable. This is a major event drawing tens of thousands of visitors on that day so if you wish to attend make your plans well in advance.
Lighting programs are also scheduled nightly at South Dakota's other great mountain carving, the Crazy Horse Monument. The nightly program includes a laser light show, but several times throughout the summer nighttime "blasts" are scheduled. Visit their web site at http://www.crazyhorse.org/ for details.
Admission is charged at the Crazy Horse Monument for these events.
