| Description: |
A person might say that some of the joy in visiting Pine Ridge is
getting there. The drive through Southwestern South Dakota's prairie grasslands
can be awe-inspiring.
The town is located in the Pine Ridge Reservation
of the Oglala Sioux Tribe and is near the site of the 1890 Wounded Knee massacre
of Lakota women and children by the US 7th Army. The Pine Ridge
Reservation at 2.7 million acres is the second-largest Indian
Reservation in the United States. The reservation includes parts of the Badlands National Park and the Buffalo Gap National Grasslands.
The Heritage Center
at the Red Cloud Indian School is nationally recognized for its collection
of Native American Art, both contemporary and historical. It is also home
to the annual Red Cloud Indian Art Show, the nation's foremost gathering
of Native American artists. Visitors and art collectors from around the
world attend this show every year and contemporary works of fine art are
offered for sale in the gallery year round.
The area around Pine Ridge was the setting for the independent documentary The Last Cowboy.
