Description: Custer is near the site of the first settlement by the Europeans in the Black Hills, the Gordon Party, who arrived within months of the discovery of gold just east of the present day downtown. A replica of their settlement, the Gordon Stockade, is just off US16A about three miles east of town. In 1874 General George Armstrong Custer's Expedition to the Black Hills also camped near Custer where gold was first discovered. Today, Custer is a commercial center for the south-central Black Hills. It is conveniently close to Custer State Park, the Crazy Horse Memorial and both Jewel and Wind caves. The town also has a number of touristy things like "The Flintstones Bedrock City" and the National Museum of Woodcarving.
