Description: The first corn palace was built in 1892 to encourage immigration to South Dakota by showing that corn and other grains could be grown on the prairie around Mitchell. Since then the building has been redecorated almost every fall with new grains and colored corn. The Corn Palace has been featured in many books and articles about "roadside architecture" and has been called everything from kitsch to fabulous. See it and take your pick. Tours of the inside of the Corn Palace are available, but the real interesting stuff is outside. Inside it is basically and auditorium for stage and athletic events. But it was once a regular stop for Lawrence Welk. Incidentally, corn growing has become something of a high art form around Mitchell, where one farm produces almost all the colored corn used to decorate the building. Info: 1-866-273-2676
