The
Norbeck Wildlife Preserve is called the heart of the hills.
If your idea of a good time is getting away from it all, this is
the place to do it. The preserve was established by an act of Congress
in 1920 and includes some 35,000 acres and more than 36 miles
of hiking trails.
Click HERE for a trail map.
Within the preserve is the 9,824-acre Black
Elk Wilderness. Harney Peak,
the highest point in South Dakota is located in the Black ElkWilderness
and is easily climbed. The preserve has lots of out-of-the-way places
were
a person can really commune with nature.
Since the area is closed to all
motorized and wheeled traffic, the setting is idyllic and tranquil. It
provides an excellent environment for wildlife spotting and
photography.
